Mission

Vermont Independent Media’s (VIM) mission is to inform and foster civic engagement among residents of southeastern Vermont. VIM is founded on the belief that independent journalism is critical for the functioning of democracy and is the lifeblood of our community.

Through its publication of The Commons, an independent nonprofit newsweekly, VIM:

*Sets a standard for fair, balanced, and accurate journalism

*Provides an open forum for diverse voices within its community

Through the educational dimension of its mission, VIM:

*Creates opportunities for discussion of important issues

*Provides learning opportunities and internships for young adults and others who want to engage in the essential democratic functions of a free press

*Offers free media mentoring workshops open to all, offering people tools for getting their voices heard
