Mission
The 19th’s mission is to empower women, women of color and LGBTQ+ people with the information, resources and community they need to be equal participants in our democracy.
About our journalism
We launched The 19th in August 2020 with the hope that it would become *the* news organization of record for women, with the added and critical bonus of giving women of color and LGBTQ+ people a more representative seat at the civic table. In our current media landscape, over 70 percent of editors are men – most of whom are White – and women-led newsrooms are still rare. Those historically underserved by the mainstream media are left without access to reliable and trustworthy news and information.
We launched at the centennial of the 19th Amendment to signal that we have a long way to go to overcome the sexism and systemic racism that has held non-White women and LGBTQ+ people back for generations. We are deeply committed to challenging the prevailing national narrative in a way that normalizes leadership and equity for women and LGBTQ+ people.
By investing in journalism that that reaches and reflects a truly representative audience, The 19th aims to have a profound impact on the news industry.
