Mission
OpenSecrets’ vision is for all Americans to be empowered by access to clear and unbiased information about money’s role in politics and policy and to use that knowledge to strengthen our democracy.
About our journalism
OpenSecrets is a nonpartisan, nonprofit producing original, independent reporting on money’s influence on state and federal U.S. politics and policy. OS was created in 2021 by the merger of the Center for Responsive Politics (founded 1983) and the National Institute on Money in Politics (founded 1999).
For forty years, our organization has tracked, compiled and reported on campaign contributions and spending, lobbying spending, unlimited outside money and personal financial disclosures so that Americans may understand money’s influence, consider the source of the political messaging they’re bombarded with, and use this information to more effectively engage in and with their democracy.
