Mission
OpenSecrets’ mission is to track and report on the flow of money in American politics and provide the data and analysis to strengthen democracy. Our vision is for Americans to use this knowledge to create a more vibrant, representative and accountable government.
About our journalism
OpenSecrets is a nonpartisan nonprofit producing original, independent reporting on money’s influence on state and federal U.S. politics and policy. OS was created in 2021 by the merger of the Center for Responsive Politics (founded 1983) and the National Institute on Money in Politics (founded 1999).
For forty years, our organization has tracked, compiled and reported on campaign contributions and spending, lobbying spending, unlimited outside money and personal financial disclosures so that Americans may understand money’s influence, consider the source of the political messaging they’re bombarded with, and use this information to more effectively engage in and with their democracy.
