Important Context is the publication of the Accountability Journalism Institute, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to independent investigative reporting.
Important Context and the Accountability Journalism Institute are committed to investigative journalism that counters mis-, dis-, and malinformation and the bad actors fueling it. We focus on public health misinformation due to its increasingly central role in a wider campaign to destabilize democratic institutions and institutions of public good.
Our work includes not only providing accurate scientific information and elevating reliable voices but also investigating and revealing the financial backers and networks behind public health disinformation campaigns.
About our journalism
The Accountability Journalism Institute and our investigative publication, Important Context are dedicated to countering politically motivated efforts to undermine science and public health. We carry out our mission by providing accurate, science-based information and investigative reporting that reveals the political, financial, and sometimes foreign interests behind misinformation campaigns.
Our work focuses on public health disinformation, including issues ranging from infectious disease to climate change and LGBTQ+ rights, and attacks on education. We aim to expose how misinformation campaigns are part of a larger deregulatory and anti-democratic agenda.
We serve a North America-based audience. We aim to reach individuals across diverse demographics, helping them identify and reject health misinformation, with an emphasis on underserved communities, who are disproportionately impacted. In addition to serving the public, we work with our scientific advisory board to equip reporters, scientists, healthcare professionals, and leaders with the resources and information they need to counter mis- and disinformation.
