Mission
Aspen Journalism is a nonprofit journalism organization based in Aspen, Colorado. Our mission is to produce investigative and in-depth journalism for those with a stake in the Aspen region, by virtue of their living, voting, owning, working, recreating, or visiting here.
About our journalism
Aspen Journalism was founded in 2011 to give talented local journalists all the runway they needed to produce investigative stories. At the time, Aspen Journalism’s concept was novel: Seek support from local donors and charitable foundations; give journalists adequate time and resources for in depth reporting; and publish the work in collaboration with other media outlets.
Since then, we have shown that the model is successful, with nearly 800 stories published and more than $1 million raised to fund journalism since our founding. Aspen Journalism has a newsroom consisting of three full-time journalists covering water, environment, history, social justice, and local public data. Working together with a long list of respected freelance contributors, we are able to cover an expanded portfolio of important issues such as COVID-19, impacts of growth on public lands and biodiversity, land use reforms and in depth stories on valley history — each from a local, investigative standpoint.
