About our journalism
Founded in 2018, The Xylom covers the world’s most pressing health and environmental disparities.
The Xylom’s name is derived from the Ancient Greek word ξύλον (xúlon), the plant tissue that transports water and nutrients from the roots to the stems and leaves. Through in-depth accountability, solutions, and visual journalism, we connect and empower a young, glocalist audience to identify and tackle grand challenges such as decarbonization, sanitation, healthcare access, and mobility.
According to the CUNY Newmark J-School AAPI Media Directory, The Xylom is the only Asian American-run news outlet dedicated to health, climate, and environmental coverage.
The Xylom is a winner of an Online Journalism Award, South Asian Journalism Award, SEAL Environmental Journalism Award, Anthem Award, and Atlanta Press Club Award. We have received further recognition from the Asian American Journalists Association Journalism Excellence Awards, Nonprofit News Awards, and the KAS Media Africa Award for Local Journalism.
