Mission

The South Berwick Reporter is a local news source that strives to foster an informed and engaged citizenry by providing factual news and information about the community of South Berwick.

About our journalism

The Reporter publishes news articles and feature stories about and for South Berwick, Maine, covering the municipal Town Council and Planning Board meetings as well as the regional school district, which includes neighboring Eliot, Maine. This online news source, when possible, also reports on town staff and temporary committees, such as the comprehensive plan, downtown revitalization and Town Hall renovation committees.

The Reporter operates with an all-volunteer editorial staff under the fiscal sponsorship of the community nonprofit SoBo Central. It publishes human interest stories as time allows and has published 400 news articles since 2023. A weekly newsletter alerts subscribers to any new stories posted that week. The news service is free and includes a Photo of the Week and an original bi-monthly cartoon. The Reporter also organizes an annual Meet the Candidates forum that introduces the community to candidates for municipal and state legislative offices.
Our community lacked any regular news coverage for six years before the Reporter started. Regional papers had eliminated local bureaus and stopped sending reporters to smaller communities, except for sensational or regionally relevant stories.
