Mission
NowKalamazoo is a nonprofit community news service and a public resource for all who live, work and play in Kalamazoo County. We produce high-quality journalism that serves the public good, and we assist citizens in accessing civic information. Our mission is to empower our readers with the information they need to make informed decisions, hold those in power accountable, and create positive change in our community.
About our journalism
NowKalamazoo provides residents of Kalamazoo County with the tools to take part in and make the community the best it can be. Our daily email newsletter and the most comprehensive event calendar in the county are our flagship services, along with community guides for issues from data centers to police cameras to protecting trees, a one-stop shop for voters at our election hub, deep dives into important community topics like neighborhood gun violence and homelessness, investigations into water quality and the criminal justice system, highlighting the small nonprofit organizations, media literacy and mis/dis/malinformation, covering a robust arts & culture scene, and pilot projects covering historically marginalized neighborhoods with residents from those neighborhoods. Our reporting focuses on systems, solutions, root causes and consequences, context and history, and accountability. Our work is always free to read and subscribe, with a focus on accessibility, and coverage priorities led by diversity and representation, equity, and inclusion. We believe journalism’s impact creates change in ways that extend far beyond legislation or government action. While policy change is one measure of success, journalism also informs public understanding, strengthens civic participation, builds community connections, and helps people make better decisions in their daily lives.
