Investigative Reporting Workshop

Mission

The mission of the Investigative Reporting Workshop is to hold the powerful accountable through original, data-driven investigative reporting produced by experienced journalists working with the next generation of investigative reporters.

About our journalism

The Investigative Reporting Workshop is an award-winning, independent news organization founded by journalist, author and producer Charles “Chuck” Lewis, a leader and innovator in nonpartisan investigative journalism. IRW is dedicated to holding the powerful accountable through original, data-driven investigative reporting produced by experienced journalists working with the next generation of investigative reporters. IRW is an independent, nonprofit newsroom based at the School of Communication at American University.

IRW fosters reporting and publishing partnerships with other newsrooms, including The Washington Post, and has developed free journalistic tools, including The Accountability Project, a groundbreaking resource for public data. Recent areas of investigation include the environment, health, banking, and aggressive policing tactics. Our work helps increase citizen engagement by providing credible news and information that addresses community needs and concerns.
