Honolulu Civil Beat

News That Matters

Mission

Honolulu Civil Beat is a 501(c)3 tax-exempt news organization dedicated to cultivating an informed body of citizens, all striving to make Hawaii a better place to live. We achieve this through investigative and watchdog journalism, in-depth enterprise reporting, analysis and commentary that gives readers a broad view on issues of importance to our community.

About our journalism

Civil Beat has been a digital publication from the start, so our reach has never been limited by print distribution. Most of our audience lives in Hawaiʻi, but we also have readers across North America, the Pacific, and around the world. We are proud to simultaneously provide Hawaiʻi residents with the news they need, and give the wider world a more nuanced and accurate understanding of Hawaiʻi’s culture, history, and special place in global events.

Our core readers include Hawaiʻi’s major movers and shakers: lawmakers, nonprofit leaders, advocates, and community leaders. Our reporting regularly prompts responses and action from these readers, allowing Civil Beat to drive significant impact.
We also seek to serve the most marginalized and sidelined communities across Hawaiʻi. In the past few years, we’ve grown our readership in rural and under-served parts of Hawaiʻi, including neighbor islands. In 2025, given sufficient funding, we will deepen these efforts to cover more geographic areas in need and fill information gaps.

Civil Beat’s regular, core beats cover the issues that matter most to the people of Hawaiʻi: climate change and the environment; the economy, including deep economic inequities; education; food security and agriculture; government accountability and a healthy democracy; housing and homelessness; Native Hawaiian issues; prisons, policing, and courts; and transportation and infrastructure. Columnists and guest contributors supplement our journalism with analysis and commentary under the banner of our IDEAS section.
